Asia report: Shares broadly higher in quiet trade

Asian shares were broadly higher on Monday with indices up in all major markets, bar Hong Kong which was slightly lower.
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.84%, while the Shanghai Composite index added 0.53% and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.1%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index lost 0.19% and the Kospi in Seoul was flat. India’s Sensex edged 0.1% higher, while shares fell in Bangkok and Taiwan. US markets will be closed for the July 4 public holiday.

Investors were monitoring new Covid-19 lockdowns in eastern China, which hit hopes that the economy could return to being fully functional.

In equity news, shares in Japanese telecoms carrier KDDI Corp fell as the company grappled with service outages that began early Saturday, affecting services to almost 40 million people.
