Friday preview: G7 leaders’ summit, UK GDP in focus

by | Jun 10, 2021

Investors’ focus at the end of the week will be trained on the UK as the G7 leaders summit in London gets underway.
Expectations are running high ahead of those meetings given what for now appears to have been a rapid convergence in views on both sides of the Atlantic on a wide range of issues during the Biden administration.

Stock market investors in particular will be looking for any details regarding the possible opening of trans-Atlantic air travel.

Against that backdrop, April GDP data at 0700 BST from the Office for National Statistics are expected to show a steady pace of expansion for the UK economy of 2.6%, following growth in March of 2.1%.

To take note of, Barclays Research is at the low end of the consensus in the City, forecasting a GDP print of just 1.8%.

Stateside, the key release to watch for will be a preliminary reading on the University of Michigan’s consumer confidence survey for June.
