FTSE 100 movers: Miners rally; housebuilders retreat

by | May 27, 2021

London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.1% at 7,036.58 in afternoon trade on Thursday.

Miners were among the top performers as metals prices rose, with Glencore, BHP, Antofagasta, Rio and Anglo American all up.

Rolls-Royce was the top performer on the index after Airbus said it was ramping up aircraft production as the aviation sector begins to recover. GKN owner Melrose Industries also rose.

Johnson Matthey was under the cosh after the specialty chemicals company reported a 22% decline in full-year pre-tax profit.

Intertek was in the red for the second day in a row after a trading statement on Wednesday.

Housebuilders were under pressure following a report that Taylor Wimpey is covering repair costs for a defective London housing block that are in addition to provisions it has made for potentially unsafe legacy developments following the Grenfell cladding scandal.

According to Bloomberg, the housebuilder is addressing fire-safety issues and other problems following persistent complaints that the development has been faulty since it was built.
