London’s FTSE 250 was down 0.2% at 22,694.77 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.
Precious metals miner Hochschild was weaker as gold prices fell.
Going the other way, leisure stocks were in the black, having fallen on Monday ahead of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement of a delay to lockdown lifting in England. Upper Crust owner SSP, Wagamama owner Restaurant Group and Cineworld all gained.
Susannah Streeter, senior investment and markets analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “What a difference a day makes to the mood on the markets as far as the hospitality and travel industry is concerned.
“Whereas the Monday blues hit shares as investors fretted about the impact a four-week delay would have on the recovery plan, today optimism is the name of the game with July 19th circled as the new freedom target. Confidence may have been boosted by comments government’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty who said it was important to strike the right balance between protecting people and opening up society, offering hope that yet another delay will be unlikely.”
