All eyes on Thursday would be on Swiss and global regulators and how they move to deal – or not – with banking system stress centred now on Swiss lender Credit Suisse.
Against that backdrop, the European Central Bank was scheduled to meet on interest rates amid very volatile market conditions.
So much so that in the span of just a few hours on Wednesday, traders had moved to pare their expectations for the policy meeting to a 25 basis point interest rate hike instead of a 50bp move.
Also due out at 1330 GMT were the US Department of Labor’s latest weekly unemployment claims figures.
In parallel, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia was scheduled to publish its closely followed factory sector index for March.
Further afield, overnight investors would also be digesting Japanese industrial production figures for January and Chinese house price data for February.
