Tuesday preview: PBoC, Easyjet in the spotlight

by | Jul 19, 2021

Financial markets’ focus on Tuesday will be on central banks in the Asia Pacific region.

Overnight, rate-setters at the People’s Bank of China are set to meet to decide on policy.

Investors will also be digesting the minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s most recent policy meeting.

Across the Channel, the European Central Bank is due to publish the results of its bank lending survey for the second quarter at 0900 BST.

Stateside, the market spotlight will be on US housing starts figures for June.

No major economic releases are scheduled in the UK.

EasyJet is among the main corporate names that are due to update investors in the UK on Tuesday.

Investors’ focus will be on how much of a recovery the carrier has managed to stage.

According to Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, even if Covid-19 restrictions were relaxed in July, the company would still have seen three consecutive quarters with capacity at under 20% with the fourth quarter unlikely to be much better.

“On the plus side there has been some talk that fully vaccinated people might not have to quarantine after travelling but that still needs to be set against concerns that rising cases in Europe might prompt some tightening of restrictions at the other end,” he added.

“[…] however the sector remains a long way from any semblance of a return to normal, as shown by the share price declines seen in the past week.”

Worth noting, across the Pond, all eyes will be on streaming video giant Netflix as it releases its second quarter results after the close of trading on Wall Street.
