Investors’ focus on Tuesday will be on the UK jobs market with the April employment report due out.
Consensus is for the unemployment rate to have held at 4.8% while the year-on-year rate of growth in headline average weekly earnings is expected to have accelerated from 4.0% to 4.8%.
However, economists at Barclays Research said they would be looking past the headline data, due to various distortions, for signs that “hidden” slack was normalising.
Among other things, they said they would be focusing on increases in the number of hours worked and declines in the number of inactive people.
Stateside, a slew of economic reports are scheduled for release, including readings on monthly retail sales, industrial production and factory gate prices.
Across the Channel meanwhile, final readings on French and German consumer prices in May are due out.
As well, at noon, European Central Bank chief economist, Philip Lane, will speak at the 11th ECB conference on forecasting techniques.
Further afield, minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s and Bank of Korea’s most recent policy meetings are due out.
