US open: Stocks mixed amid reports of progress in ceasefire talks

by | Mar 11, 2022

Wall Street stocks were mixed early on Friday after news broke that ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine may be picking up steam and a preliminary reading of this month’s consumer sentiment index.
As of 1530 GMT, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.48% at 33,332.59 and the S&P 500 was 0.09% firmer at 4,263.15, while the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 0.35% weaker at 13,083.51.

The Dow opened 158.52 points higher on Friday, clawing back some of the losses recorded in the previous session as investors digested key inflation data that revealed consumer prices had climbed further.

Friday’s early moves came after Reuters published a brief report that quoted Vladimir Putin as having said that “certain positive shifts” had occurred in the talks between the two nations.

However, US-Russia tensions were also heating up, with president Joe Biden now expected to call for an end to Moscow’s status as a preferred trade partner, according to Bloomberg, and, Congress passing a funding bill that includes $14.0bn of aid for Ukraine.

On the macro front, a preliminary reading of March’s University of Michigan consumer sentiment index revealed a drop from 62.8 in February to 59.7 at the start of the month, a larger than expected drop for the lowest reading since November 2011. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, heightened commodity prices and surging inflation all weighed on the index.

No major corporate earnings were slated for release on Friday.
