The market spotlight on Wednesday will be firmly on the US and whether consumer price inflation did indeed peak in April as some economists have posited.
America’s Bureau of Labor Statistics is expected to report a decline in the annual rate of CPI from 8.5% in March to 8.1% for April.
Core CPI is expected to ebb slightly alongside, from 6.5% to 6.1%.
Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK, said the most recent producer price numbers and survey results indicated that “any signs of a peak in headline inflation still seems some way off”.
Even so, said Hewson: “This week’s CPI numbers could go some way to determining whether we’ve started to see a pause in inflationary pressures, or whether we get a further lift in inflation expectations”.
Figures covering Chinese consumer and factory prices during the same month will also be forthcoming, overnight.
In the euro area, European Central Bank boss, Christine Lagarde, will deliver a speech from 0900 GMT.
A final reading on German consumer price data for April is also due out, before the market open in London.
No major economic releases will be published in the UK.
