Investors will be monitoring interest rate decisions from the US Federal Reserve, Bank of England and European Central Bank over the coming week, alongside a slew of economic data.
On Wednesday, the Fed is expected to announce an acceleration in the pace at which it will taper its purchases of bonds and mortgage-backed securities, which in turn will will pave the way for an earlier start to interest rate hikes.
The so-called ‘dot-plot’ summary of Fed officials’ projections is expected to show that they now expect two rate hikes in 2022, up from half of a 25 basis point increment beforehand.
Against that backdrop, on the next day Bank is expected to announce its decision to stay put. However, according to Barclays Research, the hawks will have their say, arguing in the meeting minutes that “should it quickly become clear that the Omicron variant is unlikely to be a significant threat to public health, the Bank may need to adopt a steeper hiking path than it otherwise would have done.”
Policy-makers at the European Central Bank were expected to stand pat as well, also on Thursday.
As far as economic data are concerned, on Wednesday, China’s National Bureau of Statistics will release a barrage of activity readings for the month of November.
Euro area and UK purchasing manager surveys for manufacturing and services are also due out, all on Thursday.
On that same day too, central banks in Norway, Switzerland, Indonesia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan will announce interest rate decisions.
The Bank of Japan will follow on Friday.
UK employment data for October/November are scheduled for release on Tuesday, followed by a reading on CPI o Wednesday and retail sales figures on Friday.
