Week ahead: UK reopening plans, Fed’s Powell in focus

by | Feb 21, 2021

Investors’ focus over the coming week will be very much on the UK, as the Prime Minister outlines plans for gradually reopening the economy.
His speech on Monday will be followed by the release of the monthly employment report the next day.

Economists at Barclays Research expect only a small increase in the unemployment rate for the three months to December to 5.2% from 5.0% over the prior three-month stretch.

Average weekly earnings are also seen higher with Barclays anticipating a print of 3.8% year-on-year, up from 3.6%.

Barclays nevertheless expected pay settlements to slow into 2021.

They also pointed out the lingering uncertainty around the large number of furloughed workers.

Stateside meanwhile the spotlight will fall on Jerome Powell, as he delivers his semi-annual testimony to the Senate Banking Committee.

In the euro area, the main economic releases to watch out for are the IFO institute’s monthly German business confidence survey on Monday and money supply data out of the euro area.

Further afield, rate-setters in New Zealand will meet to decide on policy on Wednesday, followed by their peers in South Korea on Thursday.
