All eyes over the coming week will be on US consumer price data for June.
The fresh figures, which will be published on Wednesday, may decide the size of the Federal Reserve’s interest rate hike when its policymakers next meet on 26-27 July.
Also of key importance for stock markets around the world, the US second quarter corporate earnings season will get underway in earnest on Thursday, when JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley are due to meet, followed by Citi the next day.
Against that backdrop, US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, is scheduled to embark on a 10-day trip across Asia and is expected to try and build momentum for a scheme to cap the price of Russia’s Urals oil exports.
According to Adam Posen at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Japan will want assurances from Washington that under certain circumstances the Treasury would acquiesce to coordinated intervention in Foreign exchange markets, Bloomberg reported.
Across the Channel meanwhile, the key day this week will be Monday, when Russia will take the Nordstream 1 gas pipeline off-stream for 10 days’ maintenance work. Fears are that it will later not be brought back online.
The German ZEW institute’s economic confidence index for July, which is due out on Tuesday, will also be closely watched.
As will a speech by European Central Bank boss, Christine Lagarde, on Friday, at the meeting of G-20 finance ministers and central bank governors.
In Asia meanwhile, the coming weekend will bring with it readings for consumer and producer prices in June followed by foreign trade for that same month on Wednesday and a barrage of activity indicators on Friday.
Also on Wednesday, rate-setters in New Zealand and South Korea are due to meet to decide on monetary policy.
