London’s FTSE 100 was flat at 7,124.99 in afternoon trade on Tuesday.
Precious metals miner Fresnillo shone as gold prices rose. Oanda market analyst Sophie Griffiths said: “Gold is edging higher after a quiet start to the week. The precious metal has struggled to make real headway since booking solid gains in the previous week.
“Falling treasury yields and concerns over rising Covid cases offered support to the precious metal last week and continue to underpin gold this week.”
On the downside, British Airways and Iberia parent IAG and Premier Inn owner Whitbread were both weaker amid ongoing concerns about Covid-19 and the Delta variant.
