London’s FTSE 100 was down 1.1% at 7,139.45 in afternoon trade on Monday.
Luxury fashion brand Burberry – which is heavily dependent on Chinese demand – was the worst performer on the index after the release of disappointing Chinese retail sales data.
Figures out earlier from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that retail sales grew 8.5% in July, down from 12.1% growth in June and undershooting expectations for a 10.9% jump.
Miners were also hit by the disappointing Chinese data, which also showed that industrial production and fixed asset investment fell short of expectations. Industrial production rose 6.4% on the year following an 8.3% increase in June, coming in below consensus expectations of 7.% growth.
Meanwhile, fixed asset investment was up 10.3% on the year in July, down from 12.6% the month before and missing consensus expectations of 11.3%.
Glencore and Anglo American lost ground.
