London’s FTSE 100 was down 0.2% at 7,235.90 in afternoon trade on Thursday.
Royal Dutch Shell was weaker as it reported lower-than-expected third-quarter adjusted earnings after taking a $400m hit from Hurricane Ida’s impact on operations.
Evraz was also under pressure after the steel producer said third-quarter sales declined amid a slowdown in the Russian construction market.
On the upside, WPP was the standout gainer as it upgraded its guidance for 2021 and hailed a “very strong” third-quarter performance.
For 2021, it now expects growth of 11.5% to 12% for LFL revenue less pass-through costs, up from previous guidance of between 9% and 10%.
GlaxoSmithKline was trading higher for the second day running after well-received third-quarter results on Wednesday
DS Smith was also in the black after it said its first half was in line with expectations as price rises offset rising input costs. Fellow packaging group Smurfit Kappa also gained.
