London’s FTSE 100 was up 0.7% at 7,546.29 in afternoon trade on Wednesday.
Miners were the standout gainers on the index as metals price rose, with Antofagasta, BHP, Anglo, Rio Tinto and Glencore all higher.
Sainsbury’s was up after the supermarket group raised full-year profit forecasts despite a fall in underlying sales over Christmas. It now expects underlying pre-tax profit of at least ยฃ720m compared with previous guidance of at least ยฃ660m and ยฃ356m made in 2020-21.
Housebuilders Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Developments were both trading down after share placings.
