Wall Street stocks opened lower on Friday, putting major indices firmly on track for a losing week.
As of 1515 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.90% at 30,683.35, while the S&P 500 was 1.22% weaker at 3,853.79 and the Nasdaq Composite came out the gate 1.61% softer at 11,366.74.
The Dow opened 278.47 points lower on Friday, extending losses recorded in the previous session as market participants digested a number of key data points.
FedEx was in at the open, with shares heading south after the shipping giant withdrew full-year guidance and said it had been forced to implement cost-cutting initiatives in order to combat soft global shipment volumes amid “significantly” worsening macroeconomic trends.
On the macro front, a preliminary reading of the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index rose to a five-month high of 59.5 in September, up from 58.2 in August but short of forecasts for a reading of 60.
No major earnings were slated for release on Friday.
