Artemis hires Liam O’Donnell amid fixed income team changes

Artemis has hired Liam O’Donnell to join its fixed income team with responsibility for Rates and Macro.

O’Donnell will be based in Edinburgh and work alongside Head of Fixed Income Stephen Snowden, and the other members of the fixed income team based in Edinburgh and London.

He joins from abrdn, where he has worked across a range of funds, including the abrdn Strategic Bond fund and the AAA Income fund. He has been Head of Nominal Rates since 2019. O’Donnell, who has a degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin, started his investment career at Abbey Capital in Dublin in 2005, before moving onto Standard Life Investments which later merged with abrdn in 2018.

Stephen Snowden, said: “This is another great hire for the team and the firm as Liam brings a wealth of investment experience, which will make a great contribution to the outcomes we aim to achieve for our clients.”

Artemis has also announced news of two departures from the team. Rebecca Young has left; Juan Valenzuela leaves to join a hedge fund in the new year. The two managed the Artemis Strategic Bond Fund and Valenzuela co-manages the Artemis Target Return Bond Fund.

The moves mean some changes to the management of both funds. David Ennett, Liam O’Donnell and Grace Le will take over management of the Artemis Strategic Bond Fund. Liam O’Donnell and Jack Holmes will join Stephen Snowden in managing the Artemis Target Return Bond Fund.

Artemis made two analyst hires during the summer and is actively recruiting for a senior high yield analyst to further strengthen the team.

Paras Anand, Artemis’ CIO, said: “We believe Liam O’Donnell’s appointment, along with the extra analyst hires, helps broaden and deepen the investment expertise we can deploy to manage fixed income assets.

“Many of our clients share Artemis’ long-term commitment to fixed income as a core, long-term element in portfolios. Liam’s appointment further strengthens our capabilities and over time will help enable us to enhance our offering in this space.’

Stephen Snowden added: ’We’d like to thank Juan and Rebecca for all the contributions they have made over their tenure to the firm and our clients. We wish them both well for the future.’
