Europe’s ETF market in 2026: Five trends reshaping investor behaviour

Europe’s exchange-traded fund (ETF) market continues to evolve at remarkable pace, entering 2026 with record momentum, structural shifts in investor demand and product innovation across both passive and active strategies.

In his latest Viewpoint Analysis, Daniel Dornel, Head of ETF Research at BNP Paribas Asset Management, identifies five defining trends that explain why ETFs have become the investment vehicle of choice for a growing spectrum of investors and where the next phase of growth is likely to emerge.

  1. ETFs continue their surge in popularity across Europe

ETFs have strengthened their position as Europe’s “investment vehicle of choice for all investors,” driven by transparency, simplicity, liquidity, and cost efficiency. Inflows hit €325 billion in 2025, with Dornel noting this “illustrates the persistent appeal of ETF among investors.”

This rise is part of a long-term global expansion: ETF assets have grown from “$1.3 trillion in 2010 to $19.6 trillion at the end of 2025.” With their ability to tailor exposures across sectors, countries and asset classes, ETFs have become indispensable tools for diversification and tactical allocation. As Dornel emphasises, “all types of investors are driving the market’s growth,” including advisers increasingly embedding ETFs into client portfolios.

  1. The rise and rapid acceleration of active ETFs

Dornel highlights a key structural shift: “The market for passive ETFs has become overcrowded, leading players to expand into the active ETF segment.”

Passive ETFs aim “match the performance of the market index,” offering daily transparency and low turnover. Active ETFs, however, allow managers to adjust portfolios dynamically and “mitigate potential losses,” providing outperformance potential that is increasingly attractive in a more competitive and volatile environmental. Although they typically carry higher fees, investor appetite for differentiated strategic continues to accelerate active ETF adoption.

  1. ESG ETFs regain momentum after a period of hesitancy

The ESG ETF segment rebounded strongly in Q4 2025, with Dornel and Chief Market Strategist Daniel Morris, noting “record flows into active ETFs and the growing interest in ESG-aligned strategies after earlier softness.”

Drivers of this rebound include clearer regulation, improving performance, and wider product availability across equities, fixed income, and thematic strategies. With ESG increasingly embedded into European mandates, Dornel expects demand for sustainability-linked ETFs to remain resilient into 2026.

  1. Cross-market divergence and tactical allocation opportunities

Recent ETF trends show divergence across regions: BNP Paribas AM commentary notes, “outflows from US ETFs but inflows to European, emerging market and China ETFs.”

This divergence highlights ETFs’ role as highly adaptable allocation tools. Investors can shift exposures quickly in response to macro conditions, geopolitical pressures, or sector rotation, reinforcing the ETF’s value as both a strategic and tactical portfolio instrument.

  1. Enhanced ETF strategies gain ground

Enhanced and factor‑based ETFs continue to gain traction. Dornel’s broader analysis points to rising interest in targeted exposures such as “defensive sectors [and] thematic growth segments,” as well as income‑oriented ETFs in low‑yield conditions.

These strategies strike a balance between passive efficiency and active precision, offering investors more refined building blocks for portfolio construction.

Why these trends matter for 2026

Dornel’s analysis shows a European ETF market entering a more mature stage, defined by:

  • ETFs becoming core allocation tools, not niche add-ons
  • Accelerating innovation, especially in active, enhanced and ESG solutions
  • Higher investor expectations for precision, adaptability, and transparency

With regulatory clarity improving and adoption broadening, ETF’s look set for another strong year of structural growth and product innovation for 2026.
