The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK has revealed brand new insights into the trends behind British migration to Portugal.
Launched the 2026 Migration to Portugal Report at the Moving to Portugal Show in London on 26th March 2026, Chamber General Manager Christina Hippisley commented: โUnlike many migration studies that rely primarily on retrospective national statistics, the data presented in this report reflects the views of individuals actively exploring how to relocate today. It provides a timely perspective on how British interest in Portugal is evolving, from what movers are seeking to regional preferences and the role that quality of life plays in relocation decisions.โ
As of 2025, there were 48,238 United Kingdom nationals legally resident in Portugal. The new 2026 Migration to Portugal Report explores the motivations pushing other UK citizens to join them, at a time when the relationship between the two countries is deepening. Mobility, lifestyle migration and cross-investment initiatives are all contributing to this, with the latter given a significant boost by the new Double Taxation Convention signed in September 2025.
The Chamberโs insights into the 2026 profile of British residents thinking of moving to Portugal reveal a significant shift in what movers are seeking. When the Moving to Portugal Show first took place a decade ago, Britons were looking to Portugal almost exclusively as a retirement destination. Now, movers are focused instead on its lifestyle offering.
This is illustrated by the fact that 11.7% of those attending the spring 2026 Moving to Portugal Show were aged 20-39, while 46.3% were aged 40-60.
Greater career flexibility and a natural midlife rebalancing of personal and professional priorities are combining to make the long-term wellbeing benefits of relocating to Portugal particularly attractive to lifestyle-focused movers. Retirees certainly still favour Portugal, but its appeal has broadened significantly outside this traditional market segment.
This ties in with Portugalโs continued development of the infrastructure necessary to support long-term international relocation, including its expanding network of international schools, modern healthcare services and reliable public transport.
Christina comments: โThis snapshot of who is moving to Portugal and what theyโre focused on sheds new light on migration trends. Itโs clear that many of those who are relocating now are driven by the desire for a better quality of life, blending professional and personal goals in new ways that work for the whole family.โ
Another key insight shown by the data was the ongoing depth of demand for migration to Portugal. On average, around 80% of participants at each Moving to Portugal Show are attending for the first time, demonstrating that interest in Portugal continues to reach new audiences, rather than simply circulating within an established group of prospective movers.
From a regional perspective, those considering a move to Portugal from the UK still favour the Algarve, with 55.2% of Moving to Portugal Show attendees in March 2026 keen to know more about life there. Interest is particularly strong between those aged 40 to 60, 62% of whom are interested in the Algarve. The region is known for its year-round communities, as well as a diversified service sector and increasing activity in areas such as technology, renewable energy and remote working. Along with its idyllic beachscapes and outdoor lifestyle, of course.
Increased demand for living and working in the Algarve has led a number of prestigious resorts to reshape their residential property and lifestyle offering. Chief among them is Vilamoura, with Carlota Varela Cid, Head of Sales at FROM: (an Arrow Global Portugal company responsible for real estate at Vilamoura and other leading resorts), commenting: โWe are seeing a new generation of international residents choosing the Algarve not just for its climate, but for its ability to support a modern, year-round lifestyle. At Vilamoura, our focus is on creating integrated communities that combine high-quality residential living with sustainability, connectivity and a strong sense of place. This reflects a broader transformation in the region, as it evolves to meet the expectations of globally mobile individuals and families seeking long-term relocation, not just second homes.โ
The Greater Lisbon area, of interest to 47.5% of Moving to Portugal Show attendees in March 2026, is of interest across all age groups. Lisbon combines lifestyle advantages with professional opportunities, making it attractive to entrepreneurs, internationally mobile professionals and those seeking a dynamic urban environment with diverse cultural and leisure venues, world-class restaurants and historic architecture all around.
Beyond these established destinations, interest is gradually expanding across other parts of the country. In March 2026, 30.2% of Moving to Portugal Show attendees expressed interest in Porto and northern Portugal, 23.1% in central Portugal, 12.7 % in the Alentejo, 11.1 % in Madeira and 5.2 % in the Azores. This distribution reflects the move to a more diverse relocation landscape, with different regions attracting different profiles of movers. Internationally mobile professionals are drawn to Lisbon and Porto, while retirees and lifestyle-focused movers often head to the Algarve. Central Portugal and the Alentejo, meanwhile, hold strong appeal to those seeking space, authenticity and lower population density.
These changing migration trends are being observed closely by Global Citizen Solutions, which helps movers compare timelines, investment thresholds, tax benefits, and family inclusion matters when making their relocation decisions. Speaking on the evolution of migration and investment trends, Adalberto Pucca from Global Citizen Solutions, comments:
โThe Golden Visa was once predominantly a real estate play. Today, regulated investment funds account for over 95% of activity, and the quality of investor engagement has risen with it. For British clients in particular, the programme has become a strategic tool for re-establishing a foothold in the EU post-Brexit and diversifying their investment portfolio, and demand has not just held, itโs matured and diversified.โ
In terms of practicalities, those considering moving to Portugal are focused mainly on residency visas (61.4% of Moving to Portugal Showโs March 2026 attendees), as well as on tax considerations (44.8 %), house prices (40.7 %), properties for sale (39.5 %) and legal matters (37.0 %). Other areas of interest include moving or establishing a business (33 %) and investment opportunities (31.2 %).
The next Moving to Portugal Shows include London on 15th October and Edinburgh on 12th November, with the Show also returning to Dublin on 22nd September 2026.
