Cineworld cruises higher as Top Gun: Maverick breaks box office records

Cineworld shares surged on Monday, with traders pointing to the fact that Top Gun: Maverick has broken box office records in North America.
Over the Memorial Day weekend, the sequel to the 1986 action drama starring Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer raked in $124m from just over 4,730 theatres.

So far, the film – which had been due for release in June 2020 but was delayed several times due to Covid restrictions – has taken $248m globally.

At 1550 BST, the shares were up 18% at 29.17p.
