London’s FTSE 100 was down 0.2% at 6,974.79 in afternoon trade on Monday.
Banks were under the cosh, with Standard Chartered and NatWest among the losers.
On the upside, Russian steelmaker Evraz and Anglo-Russian precious metals miner Polymetal both rose after tumbling in recent days. Earlier, the London Stock Exchange said it had cancelled all Polymetal trades executed between 0841 GMT and 0902 GMT after a 700% spike in the share price.
Unsurprisingly, defence company BAE Systems was among the top performers, while oil giants Shell and BP gushed higher as oil prices surged after the US said over the weekend that it was in talks with European allies about a potential ban on imports from Russia.
Miners Glencore and Antofagasta both gained as metals prices rallied.
