London’s FTSE 100 was down 0.8% at 6,830.55 in afternoon trade on Wednesday.
JD Sports Fashion tumbled after the sportwear retailer said chief financial officer Neil Greenhalgh plans to step down next year.
Housebuilder Barratt Developments suffered heavy losses as it said new home sales were falling as higher costs and fewer mortgages amid the cost-of-living crisis were deterring customers.
“The outlook for the year is less certain with the availability and pricing of mortgages critical to the long-term health of the UK housing market,” Barratt said.
Peers Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey also lost ground.
Banks were under the cosh, with Lloyds, Barclays and NatWest all lower.
