London’s top-flight index continued to grind higher, even if only modestly, at the end of a week characterised by holiday-depleted trading volumes.
The FTSE 100’s also managed to make headway despite fresh gains in sterling.
Insurers did especially well, buoyed by the record highs hit overnight on Wall Street by some of the market indices.
Precious metals miner Polymetal also fared well, tracking a rise in gold futures.
Yet more defensive issues including utilities and drug giants AstraZeneca and GSK were also wanted.
