Tuesday preview: Leadership vote, British American Tobacco in the spotlight

All eyes on Tuesday will be on the result of the no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Worth noting perhaps, some observers believe Johnson will be fatally damaged even if he manages to win the vote.

Also on home shores, at 0930 GMT S&P Global will publish the ‘final’ results for its services sector Purchasing Managers’ Index for May.

Consensus is for an unchanged reading of 51.8 down from 58.9 in April.

Across the Channel meanwhile, investors will be digesting industrial production for April out of Germany which are due out at 0700 GMT.

They will be followed an hour later by a reading for Spanish industrial production covering that same month.

No major economic releases are scheduled in the States.

For British American Tobacco’s second quarter results, investors will be watching to see if the outfit continues to make progress to move back into the black.

In March, the company announced its intention to exit Russia and lowered its guidance for full-year sales growth to 2.0-4.0%.

However, over the first quarter the consumer base for its non-combustible products increased by a further 1.1m to 19.4m, leaving it on target to meet its sales target for the unit.

The company’s shares had performed “well” year-to-date, Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK pointed out, leaving them trading near multi-year highs.
