US open: Stocks edge up despite drag from banks

by | Jul 14, 2023

(Sharecast News) – Wall Street’s main stock market gauges were moving higher again at the end of the week, helped by better-than-expected economic data and the latest quarterly results out of J.P.Morgan.

At 1541 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was ahead by 0.23% to 34,475.02, while the S&P 500 edging up by 0.09% to 4,514.06.

The Nasdaq Composite meanwhile was up by 0.26% at 14,176.09.

Nevertheless, the KBW Bank Index was down by 2.17% to 82.43.

Shares of J.P.Morgan were just 0.24% higher – albeit after hitting fresh 52-week highs – having given back most of its initial gains following its latest quarterly results.

The banking heavyweight beat the Street’s estimates for both its top and bottom lines.

Citigroup and Wells Fargo shares meanwhile had turned lower on the back of their latest results.

The economic news on Friday however was more upbeat.

According to the University of Michigan, its consumer sentiment index rose from the 64.4 level in June to 72.6 in July.

Import prices meanwhile were reported as down by 0.2% month-on-month in June (consensus: 0.1%), although the prior month’s drop was revised up.

Yields on benchmark 10-year US Treasuries were up by one basis point to 3.78%.

Front-dated West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures dropped 1.7% to $75.2 a barrel on the NYMEX.
