US open: Tesla and Netflix results drag on Wall Street

by | Jul 20, 2023

(Sharecast News) – It was a mostly weaker open on Wall Street on Thursday as investors mulled earnings from Tesla and Netflix.
At 1527 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading up by 0.44% to 35,213.75.

Yet the S&P 500 was off by 0.43% to 4,545.85 and the Nasdaq Composite was falling 1.21% to 14,184.0.

Of Tesla shares, Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said that investors were disappointed by the lack of detail surrounding the production of Tesla’s much-heralded Cybertruck.

Netflix’s second quarter revenues meanwhile fell short of analysts’ estimates.

Tesla shares were trading 6% lower and those of Netflix by 8%.

The latest economic reports meanwhile were a tad mixed.

On the positive side of things, initial unemployment claims for the week ending on 15 July surprised to the downside again, falling by 9,000 to 228,000 (consensus: 244,000).

However, Ian Shepherdson at Pantheon Macroeconomics noted the difficulty for seasonally adjusting the data around auto industry shutdown for retooling.

“At this point it is just not possible to know whether the dip in claims in the past couple weeks marks a real change or is just noise. Our guess is the latter […],” he said.

The Philly Fed’s factory sector index meanwhile slipped from -13.7 points for June to -13.5 in July (consensus: -10.0).
