Wednesday preview: UK CPI, Biden-Xi meetings in the spotlight

by | Nov 15, 2023

(Sharecast News) – Investors’ focus in the middle of the week will be split between the UK economy and geopolitics.
At 0700 GMT, the Office for National Statistics is expected to announce that the rate of increase in the UK Consumer Price Index dropped from 6.7% for September to 4.8% in October.

That is expected to be the result of a drop in energy prices due to base effects from last year’s energy price cap.

Core CPI is expected to slow alongside from 6.1% to 5.7%.

“A further sharp slowdown in headline inflation in October could reinforce the idea that the Bank of England is done when it comes to further rate hikes,” said Michael Hewson, chief market analyst at CMC Markets UK.

Against that backdrop, investors will be waiting anxiously on the results of meetings between U.S. President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at the APEC summit in San Francisco.

And overnight China’s National Bureau of Statistics is set to publish a barrage of economic activity indicators covering the month of October.

In the States, a trio of economic indicators are all due for release at 1330 GMT, those for industrial production, retail sales and the N.Y. Fed’s regional factory index.
