Financial markets’ focus over the coming week is likely to remain firmly on the Covid-19 pandemic and global attempts to rein it in and stop it.
Towards the end of the week, the European Medicines Agency is expected to approve the Covid-19 vaccine that was jointly developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.
Results from Johnson and Johnson’s late-stage clinical trial for its vaccine may also come out, although some recent reports have indicated that they might be delayed by a week or two.
Against that backdrop, analysts at ING highlight that a vote in the US Senate on newly-elected President Joe Biden’s proposed $1.9trn government stimulus package will be another key risk event.
Rate-setters at the US Federal Reserve are also due to meet to decide on policy, while fourth quarter GDP data are expected to show that the American economy managed to eke out an expansion of roughly 4% annualised.
Virtual meetings at this year’s Davos forum will also be closely monitored, given that Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese leader Xi Jinping are all scheduled to participate.
On home shores meanwhile, the spotlight will be on the latest monthly employment data.
