Podcast #44: ‘Is increasing M&A in wealth management driven by shareholders’ or can it deliver for clients?’ With Shard Capital’s Richard Bacon

by | Jun 14, 2023

There’s been a lot happening in the wealth management space over the past couple of years. We’ve seen a relentless wave of M&A activity, for example between Royal Bank of Canada and Brewin DolphinInvestec and Rathbones, Liontrust and GAM to name just a few. But does ‘big’ necessarily mean beautiful when it comes to wealth management?

Does one-size really fit all?

M&A deals have generally focussed on building synergies, scale, so called ‘operating efficiencies’ (aka cost cuts), growth etc.  BUT there’s usually suspiciously little mention of the end client, those important people who, essentially, keep these companies in business.

This week’s IFA Talk podcast guest, Richard Bacon, Head of Business Development at Shard Capital, is particularly interested in the subject and has strong opinions on it.

Tune in to hear Richard’s conversation with Sue Whitbread – about some of the positives and negatives of the changing landscape of today’s wealth management arena. And how and why the role of advisers remains key if clients’ needs really are to be properly fulfilled.
